yakudoshi years are confirmed by counted age

Standard counted age begins at one year for the year of birth, and increases by one each New Year's Day. When using the Gregorian calendar, the counted age is calculated as 'the year of inquiry minus birth year plus 1'. For example, someone born in 1985 would be counted as 42 years old in 2026. Even if their birthday has not yet occurred, this calculation remains the same. Separating this from regular full age makes it easier to understand differences with reference tables.

Differences in yakudoshi by region

The accompanying calculator uses the commonly recognized adult yakudoshi ages of 25, 42 and 61 for men and 19, 33 and 37 for women, measured in traditional counted age. The preceding and following years are identified as maeyaku and atoyaku. This scope follows Nishiarai Daishi’s explanation. Other categories, such as childhood yakudoshi, the Jusan-mairi visit at age thirteen, or women’s kanreki observance, should be checked against the guidance of the individual shrine or temple. If you have chosen a place to visit, check its guidance as well.

Use these turning points as opportunities for daily reflection

Just because a year falls within a yakudoshi period does not mean something bad will definitely happen. It can serve as a chance to reflect on things you've postponed—such as taking time off, having conversations with family, or reevaluating how you take on work. By setting one clear intention, such as 'what would I like to protect this year?', you can transform vague anxieties into a more structured and manageable daily routine.

When considering yakudoshi purification

If you wish to perform yakudoshi purification, first check the procedures and dates at your chosen temple. If there is a temple you and your family are familiar with, it may be helpful to inquire about their traditional practices. Whether or not to participate in the ritual should be considered separately from decisions such as job change or relocation. If you have important plans, take time to jointly review your intentions for the year and the practical realities involved.

A THOUGHT TO KEEP

Once I know my yakudoshi years, I can then plan how I want to spend this year.
